AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 7 CLOSES THE SHOW WITH JUSTICE
TOP 2 FINALE
It was held at the Nokia Theatre, and the gimmick theme they used was boxing competition, dressing both the finalists in boxing costumes. Erm...slightly corny if you ask me.
Cook started the show by performing Clive Davis' choice I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. It was pretty good. Slight vocal glitch here and there especially in the 1st half of the song, but overall good considering it was the opening of the finale, who's not nervous. Archuleta's 1st performance was Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (also Clive Davis' choice), and to me it was a very good song choice for a competition like this. He did quite a good job, but was it a blast? Moreso the song choice, but not the vocals. But Simon gave Round 1 to Archuleta. My call?, I'd give it to Cook.
Round 2 was contestants' song choice for a new song each, and Cook sang Dream Big. Not a typical song we would want to hear for a AI finale, but given the fact that it is Cook, and that is the type of songs we would expect to hear him do well in his future career as an artist, he did good. As for Archuleta, he chose a song called In This Moment. Again, great song choice, the kind of song everyone would love to hear in the finals. Simon definitely loved it, as he gave Round 2 to Archuleta as well! What would that say to Cook actually at that point, 'Hey you've already lost 2 out of 3 rounds, give up?'. My call, Round 2 would be tie.
Finally Round 3, contestant's favourite song. Cook did something different, he took on a song he has never done before throughout the competition, he sang Collective Soul's The World I Know. It was a blast. Again, he showed everyone this is who he will be, as an artist later on. I liked it. Archuleta did his crowd favourite Imagine. To be fair he did a very good job, better than his previous performance on that song. But taking everything into consideration, Cook to me gave us more edge and impact.My call for Round 3, goes to Cook, but definitely a close call. Simon gave it to Archuleta, saying "It was a knockout", ending the night looking not very good at all for Cook.
To me, this is one finals I could not guess at all who would win. Both did very well, in their own genre. But Archuleta was choosing all the perfect songs that usually touch people emotionally in competitions like this. We all knew he has been very smart in choosing songs since the beginning of the competition (most probably courtesy of his father Jeff Archuleta). But then again, I can't imagine Cook trying to force himself into that similar mould, it would be quite sad to witness. He did the right thing, and he did very well. And I'm also looking at what the contestants can offer as an artist in the music industry, Cook definitely outdo Archuleta hands down (to me at least). Think about it, very, very cute face, to the point it's angelic, definitely a treat especially for the young girls and aunties to watch him sing on stage, fair ability on vocals, but can Archuleta offer anything else? Take a look at the music industry out there, with so many teen idols, good looking, dance well, groovy and trendy attitude, offerring more versatility, can Archuleta survive this 'real competition' out there? I have my doubts.
FINALE -RESULTS SHOW
What I can say about the results show. Firstly there are three things in my favourite list, getting to see my favourite contestant this season, Michael Johns on stage again, watching George Michael sing one of my all time favourite song Praying For Time, and lastly getting to laugh over one of my favourite comedians Mike Myers (he's hillarious!).
Simon actually apologized before the results announcement that he was verging of being disrespectful to Cook for commenting on Archuleta's winning of all three rounds and that he won Cook with a 'knock-out'. Anyway it doesn't matter, the huge surprise came seconds after that when Cook was crowned as the idol for Season 7. The finale was filled with the Top 12 contestants, previous idols Jordin Sparks & Carrie Underwood, guest artists like Donna Summer, Bryan Adams, George Michael, Jimmy Kimmel, Mike Myers, OneRepublic, The Jonas Brothers and ZZ Top. It was well organized, interesting and most importantly, it closes the competition with much justice, the best man actually did win.
