MOVIE REVIEW : WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS

What Happens In Vegas_Poster

Plot seems like a successful recipe for a great comedy. Boy meets girl. Hate each other's guts, but realize they both got married during a drunken one night stand in Vegas. However, one of them eventually wins a USD3 million jackpot using the other's quarter. A series of plots and games entail between the pair to annoy each other and to get hold of the USD3 million. The movie's trailer was unreal.

What Happens In Vegas_Cameron Diaz & Ashton Kutcher

Verdict? Although it's a fun movie to watch, I felt it was a bit corny. The plots, the dialogue, somehow just did not match what 27 Dresses gave us. We can see that the movie was using extreme plots to highten the tensed relationship between Diaz and Kutcher, but somehow certain attempts just came off as corny and amateurish.

While we're all in love with Diaz's usual antics and charm (which is no different in this movie), Ashton was not exactly a charmer throughout the story. Not sure why, but halfway watching I just felt like grabbing his head and cutting his ridiculous hair off LOL. Overall, still a good movie to watch, but don't expect it to be as good as 27 Dresses or As Good As It Gets.

The news is out. For weeks there has been speculation that David's father has been causing a nuisance back-stage during rehearsels with his domineering and overbearing attitude. Word's out that he has been the puppet-string master behind each and every move taken by the angelic David. No wonder we see David tensed every week on stage. Could making it big in the music industry just a dream for Jeff and not really his son? Well one thing's for sure, he is now officially banned from getting involved during all the upcoming rehearsels back-stage.

Apparently the final straw came about when Jeff insisted (despite a lot of resistance from the producers) that David's performance for Stand By Me included an interpolation of Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls. It was claimed that this action alone costed the producers a hefty sum of licensing money. Now the speculation continues, whether this ban will garner more sympathy votes for poor David, or will it cause David to hit rock bottom on being over-pressured by all the negative publicity recently over his own father. Words are also going around saying that the producers may not even give the title away to little David, and the shock elimination is already in play.

ALBUM REVIEW : MADONNA - HARD CANDY (2008)

Album Review_Madonna - Hard Candy

This has been one of the most awaited album in 2008, after her great work accomplished in Confessions On A Dance Floor, and considering Madonna is taking a huge shift in her music career to work with people like Timbaland, Justin Timberlake and Pharrell. I had to admit the 'first impression' of this album was not so good for me. While there are many Timbaland-Timberlake-Pharrell injections in the music, Madonna ensures that we still hear her usual tunes in them as well, and the combination was rather awkward. I told myself, let's give it a few more rounds, and I did, to make sure I give this album a fair and thorough review.

Verdict? The album was decent to listen on an overall scale. The album opened with a rather weak song Candy Shop. I wished she would have used 4 Minutes instead. 4 Minutes remains as the strongest track in the album. I am in favor of tracks like Give It 2 Me, Heartbeat and Dance 2night. Give It 2 Me will give fans of her previous dance music a comfort although this album has gone R&B/Hip-Hop. What Pharrell did by adding the R&B feel to Heartbeat was simply beautiful. In Dance 2night, we definitely feel the mood we get in Timberlake's FutureSex/LoveSounds, I like it.

Album Review_Madonna - Hard Candy2

One thing I did notice in this album is the bolder use of brige in some songs. While it worked very well in giving us a pleasant twist in the song in Heartbeat, the bridge in Incredible and She's Not Me just practically killed the songs halfway. Incredible is actually quite a great song, but I did not fancy Madonna singing it. When you do not change or progress in your singing style, which is what Madonna maintained for so many years, you do run a risk of not being able to adapt to drastic changes in your music especially when you try really currrent tunes like Timbaland-Timberlake-Pharrell. I felt that's what happened to Incredible, and to a slight extent the whole album on an overall scale.

And as the album moves towards the end, we get a few fillers (which I find myself skipping them when listening to the whole album) like Spanish Lessons, Devil Wouldn't Recognize You and Voices.

Overall I give Maddie respect for being bold enough to try something radical in her music career, and Hard Candy is a decent effort. We need to give it to her, while her vocals has never progressed and lyrics have never been her strength, she constantly compensate that with her trend-setting images and venturing into exciting, catchy tunes like Papa Don't Preach, Vogue & Music. And who's to argue that she is still one of few female artists that managed to last until today.

Some factors which may deter some from liking this album:-

The album cover for a start, I don't get it at all LOL
After her few disappointing albums in the past, fans finally got a great come-back album with Confessions On A Dance Floor. While Hard Candy is OK, it definitely fall way behind COAD
Maddie's singing style has never progressed, it may take her more than just one album to shift the paradigm that she cannot do R&B/Hip-Hop
Although the album is very listeneable as a whole, only 4 Minutes really stand out as a strong single

Meanwhile, Madonna has got every reason to celebrate, as she has scored her 7th No.1 album at the Billboard 200 with Hard Candy. This breaks the tie with Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson as Maddie now is the sole owner of the No.2 spot for having the most number one albums for a female artist, just behind Barbra Streisand. Kudos!

AMERICAN IDOL UPDATES - WEEK 5TH MAY 2008

American Idol Season 7_Week 5May_Elimination_JasonCastro

This week's theme is Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, and I'm not sure whether is it just me, or the songs chosen by the contestants just didn't really give you the Rock N Roll feel, except for David Cook. And it was particularly true for Archuleta's choice of songs, Stand By Me and Love Me Tender? Hmm, that reminded me more of Most-Popular-Karaoke-Oldies rather than Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, don't you think? Anyway, like it or not, Archuleta is definitely smart when it comes to song choice. If you notice, he has been choosing ballads and mellow tunes nearly every week, as to me that's the only genre that he can do well. And true enough, he gets to be everyone's favourite again this week, including the judges.

American Idol Season 7 - The Top 4_David Archuleta

David Cook is still my choice for winning the competition. To me he has the most to offer in the music industry when he leaves the competition. How he did this week? To me at least he gave us some Rock N Roll feel with his songs Hungry Like A Wolf and Baba O'Riley, although I wasn't sure I like those songs particularly, especially for a competition. But he showed prowess on stage and consistency. But do you all notice one thing, he does have that cocky Hey-Look-At-Me-I-Am-Mr.Cool look nowdays? Hmm...

American Idol Season 7 - The Top 4_David Cook

Syesha has come a long way in this competition. From being the constestant we thought would leave the competition in the earlier stages, being at the bottom few (although now she still is!), she has shown the most improvement so far, and she is still around. I am still not sure I like her high notes, although powerful high range of vocals is her strength, it can also be her weakness, as she can be a little inconsistent when she hits the big notes. She sang Proud Mary and A Change Is Gonna Come. The 2nd song was definitely much better, as I thought Proud Mary was just too big a song for her. But I applaud her showmanship on stage, rarely we get to see an American Idol dance and show a little more than just singing on stage. Everyone (including herself) was rather surprised when she stayed in the Top 3, but good for her, she earned it much more than Jason, especially with his very poor two performances this week.

American Idol Season 7 - The Top 4_Syesha Mercado

Jason Castro was very weak this week, especially when he forgot the lyrics to his second song Mr Tambourine Man. You cannot afford that in a Top 4!!! His first song was not any better, he chose I Shot The Syeriff. Definitely the worst song choice for the night. He could not carry such a song at all, and it was disastrous. Although everyone thought he would stay on (with his huge female fan base), he got the boot this week. To me although I feel he has quite a unique quality that could do well when he leaves the competition, he earned every bit of his elimination this week. I have a feeling he will do quite well with his albums in the future, singing songs similar to Jack Johnson's. Genre like this is getting popular nowadays, and Jason's voice does sound quite nice in recorded tracks, much better than his live performances. Well good luck, Jason!

So we had one shocker this week, Syesha gets to stay until Top 3. Will she continue to give us another shocker by breaking the highly-predicted acticipation of the Final duo David vs David? We'll just have to wait and see!

AF concerts continue to bore all of us. I'm actually only watching out for performances from Stacy, Nadia and Riz every week. The usual bunch of disasters like Stanly, Toi & Nubhan will continue their legacy of tuneless and atrocious showmanship on stage. I wonder at times what's the point of having so many concerts, might as well just kick the rest out and have Stacy, Nadia and Riz for the finals. Yet we know public-voted reality shows are capable of undesired results, good ones get booted at times and some that totally can't sing get to stay on. This week another shocker came around when Alif got booted. Although I don't think he's good, but he definitely is not as bad as Toi or Nubhan, who sing out of tune week after week.

Stacy's Don't Speak was the best performance for me that night, eventhough it was nothing to shout about, but it was definitely way above the rest. Nadia sang One Night Only and got great reviews from the pengkritik. I didn't like the arrangement, they spoilt the song, and as usual the only thing that always put me off in Nadia's performance is her horribly overdone accent. Please, we do not need another Anita Sarawak, especially when you actually can sing, Nadia!

AIM 2008 - FAIZAL TAHIR CONTINUES TO REIGN

Shortly after his success at the APM 2008, Faizal Tahir is all smiles as he took home 4 awards at the recent Anugerah Industri Muzik AIM ke-15 this year. Clearly a crowd favourite that night, Faizal performed the opening and accepted Album Rock Terbaik and Album terbaik, Persembahan Vokal Terbaik Dalam Album (Lelaki) and Artis Baru Terbaik.

Dato Siti Nurhaliza was also a big winner that night, taking home three awards, Persembahan Vokal Terbaik Dalam Album (Perempuan), Album Pop Terbaik and Susunan Muzik Terbaik Di Dalam Lagu (Bahasa Malaysia). Kaer Azami's Izinku Pergi gave everyone a surprize by winning Lagu Terbaik, while Suki won Artis Harapan, and Waheeda took Album Pop Etnik Terbaik.

The story of the Boleyn family has been told from many angles. This movie follows Anne and Mary Boleyn's struggles being driven by their father and uncle's ambition to court the affections of the King of England. Scarlett plays the more innocent Mary, who initially wins the king's heart, and bears genuine feelings for the king. She is pushed aside however by her more aggressive and cunning sister, Anne, played by Natalie Portman. Anne relentlessly pursues the king and will stop at nothing until she becomes the Queen of England. While the two sisters battle for the heart of King Henry, one driven by true feelings while the other by blind ambition, England is torn apart.

The Other Boleyn Girl_Natalie Portman & Scarlett Johansson

Natalie Portman is definitely a treat to watch. She plays the part of Anne Boleyn with perfection. I am not a fan of Scarlett, but I must say she fits the role of Mary quite well. This movie definitely works because of the acting. Other casts like Eric Bana and Kristin Scott Thomas (who plays the Boleyn's mother) also did a good job in this movie.

MOVIE REVIEW : NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN (English)

No Country For Old Men_Poster

I've heard a few disappointments after watching this movie, especially when it was advertised to be bloody and violent, but viewers need to realize this is no action movie.This movie won the Oscars for Best Movie after all. Story tells a cat-and-mouse chase that begins when Llewelyn (Josh Brolin) bumps into a suitcase of two million dollars. Joining in the chase are Sheriff Bell (Tommy Lee Jones) and psychopath Anton (Javier Bardem).

Did the movie need a superstar like Tommy Lee Jones for the role? I didn't think so. His role in the story was pretty much too ordinary and forgettable, not sure why he took it on. But if there is one thing you would want to watch this movie for, it's Javier Bardem. His portrayal of the cold-hearted monster, his disturbing serenity in his every gut-wrenching killing scene, is simply remarkable, and leaves us stunned until the end.
