FOOD : RESTAURANT RECOMMENDATION/REVIEW - XIAO FEI YANG (小肥羊) RESTAURANT @ OFF JALAN PUDU, KUALA LUMPUR (Chinese, Non-Halal)
This has been one place I've wanted to go for some time now. I've never been a real fan of steam boat meals, but the first time I visited a restaurant called XIAO FEI YANG (小肥羊) in Shenzhen, China, I fell in love with their steam boat which was served with a choice of herbal or Ma Lak soup. Obviously it was because I am a huge fan of herbal soup, but the Ma Lak soup is worth trying as well. When I first discovered the restaurant bearing the exact name and logo in Pudu area in Kuala Lumpur, I knew it is a must try.
Deco definitely wasn't what they're selling, it looks just like any typical chinese restaurant, it was air-conditioned and comfy enough. While they have set meals at very affordable prices in Shenzhen, the KL outlet adopts the typical pay per dish ordered basis, where each steam boat dish will costs ranging from RM4-20+ each. You can opt for their herbal soup, Ma Lak (spicy) or go Yin Yang (both, below).
Although pretty much similar by standards, I must say the Shenzhen outlet serves slightly better herbal soup. Their thin sliced lamb was also better compared to the KL outlet. I don't usually take lamb, but I didn't mind the ones they served in Shenzhen's outlet. However, on an overall basis I would still recommend this place for steam boat lovers. I would though advise to go in groups more than 3, as it may come up to quite costly if shared among lesser pax. We went just both of us, ordered 8 dishes, and the bill came to RM83.
I quite like the dipping sauce they serve (above). They even serve their chicken in thin slices just like the lamb, pretty appetizing!
